East Meets West In Superb Exhibition at Lochgelly Centre
Published: Thursday 11 Dec 2008
Jill Zhang
Jill Zhang is one of the artists whose work forms part of the Scottish Art College Degree Shows Exhibition at Lochgelly Centre until 16th January. The exhibition gives the public the chance to see what some of the most talented students have created during their final year at art college.
Jill is originally from Henan province south of Beijing and that is where she spent her younger years. She went to school and university in the same province and graduated to become an English teacher.
When she came over to Scotland ten years ago she enrolled in Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. Jill said "I did a bit of drawing when I was younger. At school we concentrated mainly on murals but my interest in art really developed when I came abroad. My father was a very good professional artist and I learned much from him."
In the exhibition visitors will see Jill's oil paintings - her favoured medium. The paintings are large scale and she incorporates many Chinese symbols into them. She is fascinated by the east/west dichotomy that also informs other aspects of her work. She tells us: "I use images of my family to inspire me and the culture and history of my homeland are ever present in what I create but, as I live in Scotland, I cannot escape the influences that surround me here"
Jill adores the work of Hung Liu - another Chinese artist who took up residence in America in 1984 and has become a celebrated figure for, among other things, her beautiful canvases that depict women's experience past and present.
Visitors will be able to see Jill's paintings in the spacious Foyer Gallery of Lochgelly Centre and this is the ideal place for them because of their scale. They are large and perfectly square reflecting the cubic shape of the characters in the Chinese alphabet.
Entry to the exhibition is free.
